COVID-19 – Testing available to key workers and households

Key workers who are self-isolating can now apply for themselves and their household to get tested for COVID-19. On 23 Apr 20, Matthew Hancock MP (Secretary of State for Health & Social Care) announced that testing for COVID-19 was, from 24 Apr 20, to be extended to all essential workers who suspect that they may have the virus.

Current Government advice states that ‘those working on transport systems through which supply chains pass’ are classed as essential workers.

If an employee of an RSMA member company meets the definition above and is self-isolating as a result of them or a member of their household displaying COVID-19 symptoms, the employee or employer can register through the Government testing portal here to request a test for the key worker and their household.

Through the online portal, individuals will have the option to choose to visit a drive-through regional testing site or request a home testing kit (up to 5 home-testing kits can be requested for you and your household).

If the test result turns out to be negative, the key worker can safely return to work, as long as:

  • They are well enough
  • They have not had a high temperature for 48 hours
  • Anyone they live with also tests negative.

If the test result is positive, or someone they live with tests positive, the key worker cannot return to work. They will need to continue to self-isolate. Read NHS advice about how long to self-isolate.

Should member companies experience difficulties accessing the tests please contact lsheanon@rsma.co.uk and the RSMA shall seek to have the matter resolved on your behalf.

REMEMBER, this testing is only available to those key workers (and those in their household) who meet the definition of a key worker above and are self-isolating. RESPECT THE GUIDANCE AND ACT IN ACCORDANCE WITH IT.

The actions you take each day could save a life…………………they could also take a life - PLEASE THINK BEFORE YOU ACT!
