A motorist has been arrested for assault after moving a traffic cone to drive his Volkswagen 4×4 through roadworks before hitting a workman, leaving him with several broken bones.Police are appealing for witnesses following the incident in Portishead on Friday 9th June and have arrested a 51-year-old man.


An Avon and Somerset police spokesman said: “The driver of a Volkswagen 4×4 vehicle stopped at roadworks in Wyndham Way in Portishead at about 6pm.

“He got out of his vehicle and moved a cone and then got back in his vehicle and drove through the designated work area of the roadworks, colliding with a workman, who was injured.

“The workman was taken to hospital, where he remains after receiving treatment for a fractured finger, broken wrist and broken leg.

“The driver of the vehicle, a 51-year-old man from North Somerset has been arrested on suspicion of assault.”
